This is a subject that I seem to be asked about on a weekly basis. “What can we do about our lawn?” “Can we get rid of these weeds in the grass?” “When is the right time to feed and seed again?” So here’s a handy little guide that might help you keep your grass green and weed free and just looking tippy top!

There’s lots of little things you can systematically do to help your lawn, watering and using lawn weed killer are top of the list really, keep your grass watered and those weeds down, and your lawn should always look green. You can buy bags of weed and feed that’ll do double the job, kill weeds and aid in grass growth, so it really does kill two birds with one stone. How handy is that?! We use Evergreen 4 in 1 in the spring & summer (available at most garden centres) and a slow release feed in the autumn. 

For your BIG lawn care duties, there are two main times you want to work on your lawn; autumn and spring. Be careful with your timings though, doing the tasks below too early or two late into either season, and you’ll run the risk of damaging your lawns. So I’d aim for late February/early March, and mid to late October.

SPRING CARE.

Mow – Scarify (Just once, about 1-2mm deep) – Mow/Blow to pick up the debris from scarifying – Aeration with solid tines – Over Seeding (If not done in the Autumn) – Feeding with a high Nitrogen feed which makes grass greener – Finish with regular mowing for the rest of the growing season.

AUTUMN CARE.

Mow (Slightly shorter in preparation for scarfing) – Scarify at diagonals for maximum effect – Blow/Mow to remove debris – Aerating (with hollow tines, as this will help with the top dressing) – Over Seed – Feed with a high potassium feed to encourage new growth – Top Dress with sand or a sandy loam mix, which will improve drainage and raise oxygen levels in the soil – Brush all that in to make sure the seed, feed and top dressing get into the holes left by the aerating.

Simple as that! However, be sure to ALWAYS read the label on all feed & weed killer you’re using. You do not want to ‘over-feed/weed’ your lawns with chemicals. For best results, it would be worth investing in a weed n feed spreader, which will give you an even distribution, that’s far better than spreading by hand.
